Activity 1

Activity 2

Play ‘Give me 5’ game. Show a number of fingers up to 5 and ask your child to show you the numbers of fingers needed to make 5, e.g. you show 4 they show 1. Play this game for a few minutes.

Next show your child 5 red pieces of lego and 1 blue piece of lego. Write 5 + 1 = 6, then show 4 red lego pieces and 2 blue ones and discuss what addition to write. Repeat for 3 red and 3 blue ones, 2 red and 4 blue ones, 1 red and 5 blue ones.

Activity 3

Practise counting to 20 using fingers and show the numbers as you go along.

Next show 7 pegs on a coat hanger. Partition into 6 and 1. Turn hanger round to show that 6 and 1 makes 7 as well as 1 and 6. Repeat for 5 and 2, 4 and 3. Ask your child to close their eyes whilst you hide 2 pegs with a cloth. Then ask your child to open their eyes and say: ‘Show me 7 fingers. Now show me how many pegs you can see on the hanger. How many fingers did you fold down? That’s how many are hiding!’ Record 5 + 2 = 7. Remove cloth to check. Repeat hiding other numbers of pegs.

Activity 4

Show your child 6 pegs on the coat hanger. Cover them with a cloth and remove one and say: ‘How many were on the coat hanger? Show me on your fingers. How may have I take off? Fold one finger down. How many are still standing? This is how many are left on the coat hanger. Reveal to check. Write the matching subtraction i.e. 6 – 1 = 5. Repeat subtracting 2 pegs and so on.

Activity 5

Show your child how to hold up both of their thumbs side by side and say: ‘One add one is two.’ Ask your child to hold both thumbs and index fingers. Say: ‘Two add two is four’. Repeat showing 3+ 3, 4 + 4 and 5 + 5 and say that these are called doubles. We can say them like this:  double one is two, double two is four showing fingers to match. Then show a number of fingers up to 5, and ask your child to respond by showing the double and saying total. Repeat for different numbers.
