Week commencing 4th May

Activity 1

This week we are learning about 2d shapes.

Draw pictures of the following shapes: square, rectangle, triangle and circle and ask your child to cut them out. (Please make sure your child is supervised during this activity).

Then discuss these shapes, saying their names and how many sides and corners each of them have. Discuss how the square is different from rectangle (square has 4 equal sides and rectangle has two long and two short sides).

Next make a playdough and try to make these shapes out of playdough. What can you make out of these shapes?

Playdough recipe:

You will need

  • 8 tbsp plain flour
  • 2 tbsp table salt
  • 60ml warm water
  • food colouring
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil

Method

1. Mix the flour and salt in a large bowl. In a separate bowl mix together the water, a few drops of food colouring and the oil.

2. Pour the coloured water into the flour mix and bring together with a spoon.

3. Dust a work surface with a little flour and turn out the dough. Knead together for a few minutes to form a smooth, pliable dough. If you want a more intense colour you can work in a few extra drops of food colouring.

4. Store in a plastic sandwich bag (squeeze out the air) in the fridge to keep it fresh and use it on the following day.

Activity 2

Draw the four shapes on a piece of paper and ask your child to tell you their names and how many sides and corners each of them have. Ask them to tell you how the square is different from a rectangle.

Listen to this BBC 2D shape song and then go around your house and find the 4 different shapes (square, rectangle, triangle and circle).

Draw some of the objects you found in your house on the piece of paper, take a photo and upload it to Tapestry.

Activity 3

Play a game:

Find the objects in your house of the following shapes: square, rectangle, triangle and circle.

Put them in a small bag. Ask your child to take one out without showing it to you.

Then you ask them questions about it e.g. How many number of corners/sides? How many curved/ straight sides does it have etc? You must NOT ask about its name!

Say the name when you think you know it and repeat the same thing with you taking the shape out and you child asking you questions about it until they know what it is. Please take turns to play it.

We hope you have fun!

Activity 4

Recap the names and properties of square, rectangle, triangle and circle.

Listen to this 2D shape song on youtube:

The Shape Song

Children should be supervised when on YouTube

Then play the same game as yesterday but the person who takes the shape out of the bag has to describe it to the one who is guessing. Please take turns and we hope you have fun playing this game!

Then do this sorting activity:

Label two containers ‘3 corners’ and ‘4 corners’. Take turns to place the shape in the correct container. If the shape belongs to neither you put it outside e.g. circle. Discuss what each shape has in common.

Activity 5

Due to the Bank Holiday Friday, this session will be used as Activity 1 on the week commencing 11th of May.

Today I would like you to play a sorting activity.

Show children selection of fruit and vegetables and 2 plates.

Ask for suggestions of how they might be sorted into two plates e.g. fruit or vegetable, green not green, we eat the peel/skin we don’t eat the peel/skin, eat raw, don’t eat raw.

Ask your child to help you sort the fruit and vegetables in different ways.
