Week commencing 27th April
Our core book this term is ‘The Enormous Turnip’. It is a very popular book, with lots of different versions. Normally we would have a selection of editions of ‘The Enormous Turnip’ in our reading corner for children to access them and read them independently.
My plan for this week is to introduce the book (somebody reading it in YouTube) and then I will offer you a printed version that you can read with your child. I would like the printed version to be read everyday, so your child gets to know the story by heart.
Activity 1
Show the YouTube link below to your child (please make sure that your child is never alone while watching YouTube). It is a lovely version read by the author of this edition Irene Yates. The book contains lots of funny rhythm and rhyme to delight young children.
Show it a couple of times and encourage your child to predict words that keep repeating like ‘the enormous turnip wouldn’t…BUDGE! (you can use some actions here to make it more fun).
Activity 2
This is the version of ‘The Enormous Turnip’ for you to read to your child. Read it everyday for your child to learn it by heart. Remember to use actions and before you know it your child will be finishing up sentences for you.

Activity 3 Use the play dough from yesterday’s activity to mould key words of ‘The Enormous Turnip’. All you need is some paper to write down the words in big characters. The key words are: Cat, boy, man, turnip, girl, grew, mouse, pull, woman and dog. |

Activity 4 Sing the song below to the tune of ‘London’s Burning’ and encourage your child to think of actions for each verse. |

Activity 5 A set of small images for you to cut out and use as stick puppets to bring this traditional tale to life! Just click on the PDF link under the pictures to download the document. If you don’t have a printer at home, you can draw the characters with your child. After that, your child can retell the story using these props. |
