Activity 1

Place numbers 1 to 10 or 10 to 20 in front of you. Turn 5 cards round. Ask your child to tell you each missing number. Repeat with new numbers.

Place 1 to 10 or 10 to 20 cards in a box. Slide them up one at a time, in random order, asking your child to guess what the number might be. Discuss each number. With numbers from 10 to 20 point out the digit 1 followed by the other digit to make a teens number and discuss how 20 is written. Help your child to really focus on what each number looks like.

Practise writing numbers from 1 to 10 or 10 to 20.

You can make a table like the one below  to help them with this or they can write it on a plain piece of paper.

Activity 2

Show your child 1 to 20 cards. Shuffle them and take 2 cards out and show your child. Ask them to write the smaller number on a piece of paper. Repeat with other numbers.

Number line to 20 if you wish to print

Choose a number from 8 to 17 on the track and ask your child to make a tower of that number using lego or other construction material. Then say: “If we add three more lego pieces to the tower, how many pieces will be in the tower then?”

Repeat adding 2, then 3 using numbers from 8 to 17.

Next complete the addition sentences. You can make your own ones or use the ones below.

Activity 3

Show your child 1 to 20 cards. Shuffle them and take 2 cards out and show your child. Ask them to write the bigger number on a piece of paper. Repeat with other numbers.

Place 20 toys in a row. Put number cards 1 to 20 in front of each. Then ask them: “If we take the last 2 out how many will be left?” Take 2 toys out. Record the subtraction: 20 – 2 = 18 on the piece of paper. Repeat taking out the last two and writing the subtractions. When you get to 12 ask your child to show you the answer on their fingers.
