Activity 1

This week in Maths we are going to learn about ‘time’.

Then write the days of the week and put them in order or use the ones below. Read them several times. Discuss what happened on each day in the story. Discuss which days your child normally come to school, and which days are at the weekend.

Discuss what happens in your child’s life on each day.

Ask your child to close their eyes whilst you swap two cards. Read them and see if they can spot which days are out of order. Repeat several times.

Activity 2

Put the days of the week in order. You can make your own ones and cut the ones below. Point to today’s name. Ask your child: “What day was yesterday?”

Talk about what happened yesterday. Ask your child: “What day will tomorrow be?”

Talk about will happen tomorrow.

Point to Saturday and say that this is the next day when they will be ‘off school’.

Ask your child: “How many ‘sleeps’ will we have before then?”

Hold up a finger for each day to find out.

“Tuesday night, Wednesday night, Thursday night, Friday night and then it’s Saturday. That’s 4 nights, 4 sleeps.”

Activity 3

Put the days of the week in order. Point to today’s day.

Ask your child: “What day was it yesterday? And tomorrow? What day will be after 2 more sleeps? What day will it be after 3 more days?”

Ask other questions about which days come after ach other, including cross a weekend, e.g. “What is the day before Tuesday? And after? What is the day after Saturday? And before? What day comes after Monday?”

Then do the following activity:

Activity 4

Show a clock with a second hand.

Say: ”This thin hand takes one minute to go round the clock, that’s 60 seconds.”

When second hand is at the top, count together to 60 as it moves round the clock.

Say that it takes one minute for all the sand to pass from one end to the other. 

Ask your child to guess how many beads they might be able to thread on a string in one minute.

Then check by threading the beads onto a long string. Turn sand timer over. Count the beads as they are threaded. Shout stop when the sand has run through and show the number of beads on 1-100 grid.

If you haven’t got beads think of other activities you can do e.g. clap your hands, write your name, bounce a ball in one minute and so on?

Activity 5

Show a clock with a second hand. Remind your child that the second hand takes 60 seconds, one minute to go round the clock. Count the seconds together. Ask your child to predict which song they might be able to sing (at a reasonable pace!) in less than a minute.

Say: “Do you think we could sing 10 green bottles in less than a minute, it has a lot of verses! 10 fat sausages doesn’t have as many verses, so maybe that would work?”

Take several suggestions and try them against the clock. Next practice writing days of the week.
