Activity 1

Children will love to learn how plants drink by using cabbage, celery or white flowers to suck up colourful water. The main force that moves water up into the plants is called capillary action. Cabbages and celery, which are plants, have lots of tube-shaped cells that take advantage of these physical forces.

Plan ahead, since they will have to sit in coloured water for 24-48 hours before you see a dramatic colour change:

Step 1: Fill two vases or jars three-fourths of the way to the top with warm (not hot) water.

Step 2: Ask your child to add 10 or more drops of blue food colouring to one vase and 10 or more drops of red food colouring to the other vase.

Step 3: With a sharp knife, make a fresh cut on the bottom of the cabbage stem, by cutting 1 or 2 cm. Then, cut the cabbage in half vertically, from the bottom up, leaving the top 10 cm or so of the cabbage intact, so the two pieces are still attached at the crown. If possible, try to cut down the middle of one of the big leaves. If you’re using celery, make a vertical slit about 5 cm (2 in) long in the bottom of the stalk.

Step 4: Using rubber bands, secure the bottoms of each side of the cabbage and make a fresh cut at the bottom, a few centimetres up from the old cut. You do not need to do this with the celery.

Step 5: Put one half of the base of your cabbage or celery in the red water, and the other half in the blue water. Ask your child what they think will happen to the water.

Today is slime day! This activity is really fun and hands-on; children love exploring the strange properties of this cross between a liquid and a solid.

You’ll need water, cornflour and food colouring to make the slime.

1. Use a bowl to add a few drops of food colouring and water and stir it with a spoon.
2. Pour some cornflour into another bowl.
3. Slowly add the water and food colouring mixture into the bowl and mix it with your hands.
4. If the slime is too powdery, add more water and food colouring.
5. If it is too runny add more flour.

Roll some slime into a ball in your hand and then stop – it turns back into a liquid!

Activity 3

Get your child’s hands dirty with some paint to handprint on a piece of paper. Try to paint the fingertips in a lighter colour. Use the pinkie finger to make ears on the side of the thumb print. Paint on a tail. Add any other decorations or leave it as is. The picture below has a vine for the monkey to swing. After it finishes drying, add in facial features and any other details using a marker.
