  • Why do you think the character is standing on boxes?
  • Why is he holding a ball?
  • What importance do you think the lights have?

Now read the Blurb:

What do you think ‘sweating over each stitch’ means?

Do you think there is a link between what he makes and his dream? Why or why not?

Why does he owe Dragon? What happened?

What do you think this book is about and why?

Justify you answers with evidence.

English Activity 2

Today, we are going to meet a couple of the main characters – Budi and Dragon.

Read the extracts below.

What type of people are Budi and Dragon?

Choose one character to focus on, draw him and annotate your picture with noun phrases that describe what he is like.

English Activity 3

Below are pictures of Jakarta, Indonesia.

There are pictures of the modern city, the slums and a picture that shows how close the slums are to the city.  Where do you think Budi lives and why?

Write a short diary entry as Budi describing what it feels like to live in the slums. Include parenthesis and conjunctions.

English Activity 4

Budi is child who does not go to school. Read the extracts below to see what Budi and his friends do.

Answer these questions:

  • What do they make?
  • Who owns the factory?
  • Why do you think this might important in the story?
  • What are the conditions like there?
  • Why do you think Budi works and does not go to school?
  • What difference would it make?
  • “Stitching the upper is the most important job in the factory because that’s the part you use to kick the ball. If there’s a crease in the material the consequences could be disastrous. Someone might end up missing a penalty in the World Cup Final. It could literally change the course of history”.
  • What does this quote reveal about Budi’s character?
  • Do you think he’d have a different attitude to work if his factory manufactured a different product?

English Activity 5

Re-read the extracts from lesson 4. Summarise what you have read. Keep your summaries to 100 words, highlighting the main ideas/parts of the narrative.
