Activity 1

This week we are going to learn about money.

Show your child all coins. Sort them into 3 sets: copper, silver and gold. Discuss how copper coins are not worth much because you can buy very little with them, silver are a bit better, and gold coins are worth much more!

Remind your child that gold coins are pounds not pence. One pound coin is worth 100 pennies! Ask your child to help put them in order of value. You can tell them that we did this activity in class before.

Activity 2

Give your child a real 10p, 20p and 50p coin. Ask them to look at the 10p coin. Point out the 10 on it and explain that this coin is worth the same as ten pennies.

Put 10 pence coins in front of them. Repeat for 20p coin. Explain that the 50p coin is worth 50 pennies, and this would take up too much room and I am not sure you have that many pennies at home!

Point to 10 on the 1-100 grid. Which coin is worth the same as this number of pennies? Show me! Ask your child to point at the correct coin. Then repeat for 20p and 50p.

Activity 3

Put all the coins in front of you on the table. Then ask your child to close their eyes while you take one coin. Next ask your child to ask you questions to find out what the coin is without asking its value. “Is it round? Is it copper? Will it buy lots?”

Help your child to remove from table the coins it cannot be. If it is not copper we can take down 1p and 2p.

Take turns and repeat with other coins.

Next do the following activity:

Activity 4

Price some snacks 6p, 7p, 11p, 12p, 15p, 21p, 22p & 25p. Give your child a 5p coin & ask if they have enough to buy the cheese triangle for 6p. Agree that they need 1 more penny. Give them 1p, record the addition 5p + 1p = 6p.

Give your child a 5p coin & ask if they have enough to buy a breadstick at 7p. Point to 5 on the 1-100 grid, & count on 2 to get to 7. They need 2 more pence.

Discuss how you could give them 2 pennies or a 2p coin. Record addition.

Repeat, giving your child 10p coins & working out how much they need to buy items for 11p, 12p and 15p, & then 20p coins to see how much more your child needs to buy items for 21p, 22p and 25p.
