Week commencing 22nd June

Activity 1

The book for this week is ‘Monkey Puzzle’ by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler, both from the ‘Gruffalo’ books. The book is told in rhymes and have very imaginative and detailed pictures.

Read the book to your child and ask the following questions:

What is this book called?

What is the book about?

What happens next?
Why did that happen?
Who read the book with you?
Who is the book about?
Can you tell me about anyone else in the story?

Can you tell me about the illustrations?
Do you want to hold the book and turn the pages?

Did you like this book?
What did you like/dislike about it?

When talking with children about their books repeat back their response including more words, to support their language development, for example “no wings” you could respond back “monkey’s mum doesn’t have wings”.

Activity 2

Cut the pictures below and place them on a table for your child to match the animals with their little ones. Ask them to talk about why they made their choices: do they look the same? Is it anything different? Are they the same colour? Do you remember the story of ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ (pointing at the butterfly and the caterpillar)?

Activity 3

This video shows Julia Donaldson and her husband performing the ‘Monkey Puzzle’ song. She uses MAKATON, so lots of action are added to the song. Practice singing and copying the MAKATON actions with your child. I include the lyrics for you to sing along:

My mum isn’t a great grey hunk.

She’s got no tusks and she’s got no trunk.

She doesn’t hiss and she doesn’t croak.

Butterfly, butterfly, please don’t joke.

It’s a monkey puzzle. Butterfly, butterfly, can’t you see?

It’s a monkey puzzle. None of these animals look like me.

My mum doesn’t have lots of legs.

She’s got no beak and she doesn’t lay eggs.

She doesn’t flitter about all night.

Butterfly, butterfly, get it right.

It’s a monkey puzzle. Butterfly, butterfly, can’t you see?

It’s a monkey puzzle. None of these animals look like me.

Here comes someone with fingers and toes

And very long arms and a nice pink nose,

A curly tail and a furry tum.

Butterfly, butterfly – that’s not Mum!

It’s a monkey puzzle. Butterfly, butterfly, are you mad?

It’s a monkey puzzle. That’s not my mummy – no, that’s my dad!

Activity 4

This is a video of a storyteller reading ‘Monkey Puzzle’. Watch it with your child and create actions together for different parts of the story. A wiggly arm could be a snake and a crawling hand, a spider.

Activity 5

Explore the picture below with all the animals. Does your child know all these animals? How could you describe them?

Take turns to describe one of the animals: number of legs, colour, fur or skin, size and other features to encourage your child to use descriptive language.
