Similes and Metaphors.
Click on the BBC Bitesize webpage below to find out more. Complete activities 1 and 2 on the webpage.
English Activity 2
Today, we will learn about paragraphs and how to use them in letter writing.
Paragraphs are a collection of sentences. They are used in writing to introduce new sections of a story, characters, ideas or pieces of information.
Paragraphs help readers to enjoy what has been written because they break text up into easy-to-read sections or themes / topics.
In a piece of writing, such as a thank you letter, paragraphs can be used to separate:
Challenge 1
Below is a jumbled-up letter. I forgot to paragraph it into different themes / topics. Can you select the first word of each sentence where a new paragraph should begin (clue – there is an introduction and three paragraphs altogether). Rewrite the letter correctly.
Dear nurse,
I would like to tell you how thankful I am for the amazing work you are doing looking after people who are in hospital. Over the last few weeks, everyone has been in lockdown and stayed at home to stay safe from Coronavirus. You also could have stayed at home, however you have decided to care for ill people. In hospital you do everything you can to look after people who are ill or are having operations. You care for patients everyday even when you are worried about your own safety – I thank you for that. Lots of patients come to hospital and you continue to work with a smile that outshines the sun. Every Thursday, I stand on my balcony and I clap for you and all the other doctors and nurses in the NHS to say a BIG THANKYOU. I hope that you can hear me.
Yours faithfully,
Tom |
Did you spot the metaphor? What modal verb did Tom use?
Challenge 2
Imagine you write a thankyou letter to an astronaut. What will you thank the astronaut for? Put your ideas into themes / topics. Each of these themes / topics will make a new paragraph.
Top-tip: Put a simile or metaphor into your letter
English Activity 3
Using Modal Verbs
Let’s remind ourselves about modal verbs and how we use them in our writing. Click on the BBC Bitesize website link below, watch the videos and and then do activity 1. After that, complete the worksheet below.
English Activity 4
Today, we will show our thankfulness by writing a formal thankyou letter to a nurse, doctor or other essential worker. Look at the slides and then write your own thankyou letter.
Challenge
Now write your own thankyou letter to a nurse, doctor, ambulance driver in the NHS or any other essential worker (postal worker, bus driver, food delivery worker).
Top-tips
Paragraphs can be used to separate:
the introduction
the different reasons why you are thankful
concluding statements
Try to include a modal verb, simile or metaphor. Impress your teacher with your writing skills.
It will be really lovely to display your letter on the school fence for everyone to see your letter of thankfulness. Upload your letter onto the blog or deliver it to school so that it can be laminated for display.
English Activity 5
I found these space news articles very interesting. I hope you do too.
