Activity 1 Max the monkey wants to share with his friends Marcia and Marcel. Max has some different types of fruit to share fairly between his friends. Can you share the different types of fruit fairly? How many oranges does each monkey get? How many strawberries does each monkey get? How many apples does each monkey get? How many bananas does each monkey get? Cut out the cards and play the game with your child: |
Activity 2 The picture below is by Axel Scheffler, the illustrator of “Monkey Puzzle’. There are two activities here for you to do: Count all the leaves (you could do this in two different ways, either counting the group of leaves coming from each little branch, or each individual leaf, which is a very large number). The second activity is ordering all of the animals from smallest to biggest. You could do this by drawing them in a separate piece of paper. |
Activity 3
Measure the distance between different rooms in your house in steps. To make it more fun, you could compare different kind of steps, for example, the distance between the kitchen door and the bathroom door is 12 child steps or 5 elephant steps (by counting using big steps). This activity could be done outdoors to extend the distance. Encourage your child to record their measurements (by writing down the number of steps).
Activity 4 Go outside and play hopscotch. There are many benefits, including developing motor skills, balance, special awareness and hand/eye coordination, but, also, there is a great way to practice numbers and draw them. Have a go too! when was the las time you played hopscotch? |
I don’t know what the weather will be like today, so swap with another maths activity if it rains. |
Activity 5 Make numbers using pasta shapes (any shape would work). Another option is to use cooked and cooled spaghetti, which works better to for making curves as in numbers 0 and 2. |
