Activity 1

This week our book of the week is The Enormous Turnip.

Read the below powerpoint through with your child.

Then read through again and ask the below questions also pointing at the words or sounds your child may be able to read. You can help them with blending too by saying c-a-t, d-o-g, m-a-n, o-l-d etc and letting them to blend these sounds into words.

Questions:

• How does this story begin? - Once upon a time.
• Can you think of different words that can be used at the beginning of the story? - Long time ago, One day, Once there was…
• Who did the little old man shout to help him?
• Who did the little old man, the little old woman and the boy shout to help?
• Who did the little old man, the little old woman, the boy, the girl and the dog shout to help them?
• Tell me a type of farm animal?
• How are the mouse and the dog different?

Activity 2

Listen to this version of the story of The Enormous Turnip.

Next read the story of The Enormous Turnip again using pictures from Activity 1 with your child and ask the following questions and discuss new vocabulary:

• Discuss words such as budge - make or cause the slightest movement, farmhouse - a house attached to the farm, especially where the farmer lives, farm - an area of land and its buildings, used for growing crops and rearing animals.
• Do you remember what seeds did you plant in class just before the school closed? (cress)
• What did we need to grow plants? (cup, soil, sun, water). 
• Name 3 characters in the story.
• What vegetable were they trying to pull up?
• Who tried to pull it up on their own?
• Who did the little old man call for help first?

Then encourage your child to retell the story by themselves using the pictures.

Activity 3

Read the story again with your child and ask the following questions:

• What do these words mean; budge, farmhouse and a farm. 

• Name 5 characters in the story.
• Who did the little old man shout for help first?
• Who did they call to help after the little old woman?
• Who did they call to help after the boy?
• Who did they call to help after the girl?
• Who did they call for help after the dog?
• Who did they call for help before the mouse?
• How many characters did it take to pull up the turnip?
• What did the little old man do to thank everyone at the end?

Next make your own story map. You can make different characters and change the plot. There is an example one below. 

Activity 4

Read story of The Enormous Turnip again with your child and answer the following questions:

• Name characters in this story?
• Which animals lived in the farmhouse?
• What other animals can live in the farm?
• Why do you think they wanted to pull up the turnip?
• Why do you think the turnip wouldn’t budge?
• Can you describe the turnip?
• Why do you think the little man invited everyone for dinner?

Next use your own story map to retell it.

Then do the following activity. 

Activity 5

Due to the Bank Holiday Friday, this session will be used as Activity 1 on the week commencing 11th of May. 

Can you retell the story of The Enormous Turnip using your story map.

Next draw your favourite part of the story and label it or write a caption.

Discuss what other vegetables soups do you eat at home.

Today I am making a beetroot soup which is quite popular in Poland where I am from.
